Which Medications Are the Best For Social Anxiety Disorders

social anxiety disorder medications

Many people who are suffering from Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) are also aware of the many different types of Social Anxiety Drugs that are available on the market today. Some of the common drugs are known as tranquilizers while others include benzodiazepines. These are often prescribed to relieve the patient’s symptoms such as restlessness, irritability, depression, and fear of public speaking. But these medications have some serious side effects. This is why patients, who prefer to avoid the harmful side effects of these anxiety drugs, are turning to alternative treatments for their condition.

SSRIs or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors are a type of medication that blocks serotonin from being absorbed by the brain. When serotonin is blocked, it causes negative side effects such as a depressed mood, increased anxiety, insomnia, nausea, and weight gain. The most common SSRI drugs are fluoxetine, sertraline, and paroxetine. However, there are other SSRI drugs that have less severe side effects and they are considered as alternative treatments for SAD.

Some of the other commonly used SSRIs include fluvoxamine, escitalopramine, and tricyclic anti-depressants or TCA. However, these medications are not effective in all cases. For instance, sertraline is known to cause an increase in anxiety symptoms but there are many users who report feeling no change in their mood. Likewise, there are some who report that they do notice a change in their condition after taking escitalopramine.

Tricyclics are another type of SSRI drugs that are widely used as anxiety treatment. They are known to help reduce both anxiety and depression symptoms. However, those who experience excessive weight gain with their SSRIs are not advised to take this type of antidepressant. Other SSRI medications include fluoxetine and alprazolam which are also antidepressants.

There are also SSRIs that have the opposite effect of what their label implies. This type of drug can actually cause over stimulation of the brain. For instance, sertraline can result to over excitement which may cause excessive perspiration, dry mouth, and rapid heartbeat.

Other SSRI drugs that are frequently prescribed as an anxiety treatment include tranquilizers and benzodiazepines. Although SSRIs tend to be less effective in treating SAD than benzodiazepines, it does not mean that SSRIs are totally ineffective. SSRIs are known to be much more potent and have less serious side effects than benzodiazepines. However, these drugs do have their own set of possible side effects which need to be considered.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors or MAOIs are another group of prescription medications for anxiety. MAOIs work by preventing the breakdown of a chemical called serotonin in the brain. It is possible that MAOIs can lead to some serious side effects such as delusions, hallucinations, mania, aggressiveness, insomnia, headache, dizziness, flushing, sweating, heart palpitations, tics, agitation, and weight gain.

One of the best options in treating anxiety is taking prescription drugs without any side effects at all. Natural remedies are also available today that offer safe alternatives to expensive medication without any negative side effect. No matter what is your choice, you should always talk to your doctor before taking any kind of medication. Remember, no one is perfectly healthy, no matter what health problems they may be suffering from.

Some Common Medicines

The most common of all MAOI medications for severe anxiety are buspirone, an MAOI type called Oxapro, and Zoloft. Buspirone acts as both an anti-depressant and anti-anxiety drug. Some buspirone side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, insomnia, dizziness, headache, dry skin, constipation, and urinary retention.

Another very effective anti-anxiety medication used to treat anxiety disorders is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or SSRI’s. SSRIs are considered to be the most effective group of medications for anxiety disorders because they improve the body’s ability to eliminate serotonin from the brain. When a person has low levels of serotonin, it becomes difficult for them to face certain social situations. SSRI’s are sometimes used to treat depression and other health conditions as well.

Although these are generally considered the most effective anxiety drugs and treatments available to treat social phobia, they can have some serious side effects. Many people suffer from panic attacks while taking these medications. Other people experience difficulty sleeping at night and can even lose their appetite. If you are considering using one of these anti-anxiety medications, you should discuss it thoroughly with your doctor. Be sure that you understand all of the possible side effects so you can avoid them.
